The book uses the Western Desert of Egypt as more than a dramatic backdrop. Its long distances, brutal weather, and layers of history make every lead feel hard won. Alex is not a superhuman agent. In The Gospel of Echoes, Alex has become a Cambridge theologian and occasional MI5 consultant. Following the death of his wife, he retreats to his ancestral home in Cornwall, hoping for a quieter life. Instead, the disappearance of a local boy pulls him into another mystery, one connected to ancient Greece, art and objects hidden after the Second World War, and questions that reach into Alex's own family.

Across both books, Eaton pairs research with momentum. The plots are interested in manuscripts, theology, history, and the ways old stories can be used in modern struggles, but they do not stay in libraries for long. Threats, rival agendas, missing people, and dangerous journeys keep the stakes immediate.

Expect globe-spanning suspense, religious-history puzzles, and a lead character who wants the facts even when finding them makes life much harder.
