Albatross Books in Order

The Albatross books are near-future stories about a scientist caught in a political storm, but they are also about friendship, fear, identity, and the strange pressure of being watched by everyone. R. A. MacAvoy wrote the two-book series with Nancy Palmer, and their collaboration gives the story room for both technical ideas and offbeat human moments.

The first book, Albatross, follows Dr. Rob MacAulay, a physicist known for work on quantum theory. Rob is gentle, brilliant, and much more interested in ideas than public attention. Then he is framed as a terrorist and forced to run while authorities, politicians, and the media turn him into a symbol they can use.

Nothing is simple for long.

The setting is a recognizable near future in which political institutions are fraying and personal privacy is hard to keep. Rob's scientific reputation does not protect him. If anything, it makes the situation worse, because people around him want to decide whether he is a dangerous weapon, an inconvenient embarrassment, or a person worth helping.

Thomas Heddiman, a technical consultant working with the police, provides another key viewpoint. His work puts him on both sides of the chase: he is expected to help find Rob, yet he becomes increasingly aware that the official story does not add up. Their connection gives the series much of its momentum. This is not just a fugitive plot. It is a story about whether two people can trust each other when institutions have made trust costly.

The books ride a deliberate line between science fiction and fantasy. Quantum physics matters, but so do Rob's unusual abilities and his unsettling tendency to flinch away from danger in ways that affect the people around him. MacAvoy and Palmer do not treat the scientific concepts as a lecture. They use them to ask what happens when a person becomes too unusual to fit comfortably into the world around him.

In Shimmer, Rob has been cleared of the accusations against him, but public attention has not gone away. He is living in the United States and pulled among his husband, a young neighbor, two strong-willed horses, and academic life at Harvard. Teaching, research, and attempts to understand his own power all create fresh complications.

Start with Albatross. It establishes the political danger, Rob and Thomas's relationship, and the questions that Shimmer develops. Expect a restless, character-centered mix of chase thriller, speculative science, and a hopeful fairy-tale streak.
