Author bio
Alana Terry writes Christian fiction that likes to get its hands dirty. Her books move through suspense, romance, women's fiction, and middle grade adventure, but they usually come back to the same things: pressure, conscience, faith, and what people do when life stops being simple. She is a USA Today bestselling novelist, and she writes from rural Alaska, where the landscape is big enough to suit the kind of danger and soul-searching she puts on the page.
She does not seem very interested in easy answers.
A lot of her public author persona is refreshingly down to earth. She has described herself as a pastor's wife, a homeschooling mom of three, and a self-diagnosed chicken lady who hates cooking. That everyday family life matters because it keeps her work grounded. Even when the plot involves a prison camp, a hijacked flight, or a missing child, her characters still feel like people with chores, worries, awkward conversations, and ordinary hopes.
Terry has said that many of her story ideas grow out of real-life accounts, especially memoirs and biographies. You can see that in the subjects she returns to again and again: human rights, religious freedom, social pressure inside churches, and the cost of doing the right thing when the right thing is dangerous. Her debut novel, The Beloved Daughter, a story set in North Korea, helped launch her fiction career and earned recognition through the Women of Faith writing contest.
Then she kept going.
Readers who start with the Kennedy Stern novels, beginning with Unplanned, meet a young college student who keeps stumbling into the worst situations imaginable. Those books are fast, tense, and built around hot-button issues, including abortion, trauma, police brutality, sexuality, free speech, and persecution. If you pick up Identity Theft or Termination Dust, you get a different flavor of suspense, one shaped by Alaska, where distance, weather, and isolation matter as much as the villain. And in books like The Beloved Daughter and Out of North Korea, she writes about prison camps, escape, and faith under regimes that punish both.
Not every Alana Terry book is a thriller. In the Sweet Dreams romances, including What Dreams May Come, she leans into calling, grief, family pressure, and second chances. Her Orchard Grove novels sit closer to women's fiction and spend more time with illness, marriage strain, church life, and the long work of healing. She has also written the My Solar-Powered History books for younger readers, sending a set of siblings into the past to explore Japanese American internment, Jamestown, and wartime China.
Prayer shows up in her work because it shows up in her life. Terry is connected with the Praying Christian Women ministry and podcast, and she has also written short prayer guides focused on missions, North Korea, the persecuted church, and other causes close to her heart. Across genres, what readers seem to get from her is not polished perfection but urgency, compassion, and a willingness to ask uncomfortable questions.
These days, Alaska still feels like part of the cast. Terry lives there with her family, and she has written about the northern lights, the midnight sun, hauling water, goat chores, and the way real life keeps moving while books are being made. When she is not writing, she is often described as teaching, leading homeschool activities, spending time with her kids, or pacing outside while trying to figure out the next plot twist.
