The Alan Craik novels are the shared work of Christian Cameron and Kenneth Cameron, published under the pen name Gordon Kent. Alan's first case in Night Trap, also known as Rules of Engagement, begins with the unresolved death of his father, a celebrated naval pilot. What looks like a painful private question becomes evidence of a serious security breach. Alan's need for answers gives the series an emotional center from the start.

Later books send him into wider crises. The settings include carrier battle groups, aircraft operations, Washington offices, foreign ports, submarine threats, and unstable regions where military planning has to meet local realities. That does not slow the stories down. It makes the danger feel tied to choices, timing, and the information a character does not yet have.

Alan is no effortless action hero. He is persistent, sometimes difficult, and often caught between duty and the people he cares about. His relationships, especially his marriage and professional alliances, gain weight as the series goes on. Old decisions keep returning.

Begin with Night Trap / Rules of Engagement and read forward through Peace Maker, Top Hook, Hostile Contact, and the later novels. The individual plots stand on their own, but the full run gives the best view of Alan's evolving life and the accumulating costs of his work.
