Author bio
Alafair Burke is an American crime novelist, law professor and former prosecutor whose fiction follows detectives, lawyers and women navigating dangerous personal relationships. Her professional experience gives her stories a close interest in evidence, police work and the decisions that shape a criminal case. She writes both recurring character series and separate novels of domestic suspense.
Burke was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and grew up mainly in Wichita, Kansas. Her father is crime writer James Lee Burke, and her mother was a school librarian. The presence of the BTK serial killer in Wichita helped turn crime into an early fascination. At home, mysteries offered a way to imagine frightening events being investigated and explained.
Watching her father keep writing through years when his books were out of print taught her to see writing as a commitment beyond its financial rewards.
She studied psychology at Reed College in Portland before attending Stanford Law School. At Stanford, she worked on law journals and was elected to the Order of the Coif, a legal academic honor society. After graduating, she clerked for Judge Betty Binns Fletcher on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. She then became a deputy district attorney in Portland, where much of her work involved domestic violence. Her responsibilities included advising police, giving her experience of investigations as well as courtroom proceedings.
During her prosecution career, Burke tried more than thirty criminal cases and helped develop neighborhood approaches to prosecution. She later moved into teaching, joining Hofstra's law faculty in 2001. Her academic work examines prosecutorial decision making, policing and responses to domestic violence. She has also written about responses to crime beyond punishment, and how the law treats people who have survived abuse.
Her debut novel, Judgment Calls, appeared in 2003 and introduced Portland prosecutor Samantha Kincaid. The character works within the same district attorney's office where Burke had served. With Dead Connection, published in 2007, Burke introduced New York detective Ellie Hatcher. Ellie's Wichita upbringing and her father's pursuit of a serial killer give this second series a different connection to Burke's own history.
Her novels often ask how well people understand those closest to them.
In The Ex, a defense lawyer's certainty about a former partner is tested by a murder accusation. The Wife follows a woman whose husband's public success and alleged misconduct threaten the life she has built. The Better Sister brings estranged sisters together after a killing. These stories place questions of loyalty, judgment and identity alongside the practical work of solving crimes, making personal knowledge something that can be questioned as closely as physical evidence.
Burke has also collaborated with Mary Higgins Clark on the Under Suspicion novels, expanding her work beyond her own series and independent thrillers. She has served as president of Mystery Writers of America and was the first woman of color elected to the role. Alongside writing fiction, she remains a tenured professor at Hofstra, teaching criminal law and procedure. She lives in New York City and East Hampton with her husband and dogs.
