Author bio

Aisha Saeed was born and raised in South Florida, the daughter of Pakistani immigrants. She spent her childhood between Palm Beach and Miami, with books, libraries, and family stories all close at hand. Pakistan was never abstract to her. It was the place of relatives, memory, language, and the summer heat she still remembers.

She was a serious reader early, the kind of kid who left the library carrying as much as she could hold. She loved series fiction, but one of the books that stayed with her most was Up the Road Slowly, because it showed her how much a character's inner life could matter.

That feeling of being seen would matter later.

In college at the University of Florida, Saeed earned bachelor's and master's degrees in elementary education and kept reading widely. Around that time she found Shabanu: Daughter of the Wind and was struck by something simple: for once, she saw a brown girl on a book cover. It pushed her to imagine writing the kinds of Pakistani and Pakistani American stories she had rarely found as a reader.

Before publishing novels, she worked a string of jobs that now sound like the setup to a very busy life. She taught second grade in Michigan, Florida, and Georgia, then went to law school at Georgia State and worked as an attorney helping children with chronic illnesses and disabilities get the support they needed in school. The thread through all of it was kids, fairness, and education.

Justice keeps showing up in her work because it kept showing up in her life.

She wrote Written in the Stars over a long stretch of teaching, law school, and new parenthood, finishing the manuscript in stolen pockets of time. The novel, about a Pakistani American teen trapped in a forced marriage, grew out of stories she had heard in her community and from her desire to explain a difference that matters deeply to her: arranged marriage is not the same thing as forced marriage. The book takes on a painful subject without flattening the people around it into stereotypes.

From there, Saeed kept widening her range. Amal Unbound and Omar Rising bring readers to Pakistan through young protagonists who run into class barriers, corruption, and rules meant to keep them small, but who keep pushing back anyway. Bilal Cooks Daal turns toward a younger audience with warmth and patience, using one slowly simmering dish to talk about family, friendship, and sharing culture. She has also written playful adventure in the Wonder Woman Adventures books, contemporary romance with Yes No Maybe So, and a more magical love story in Forty Words for Love.

Across age groups, her stories return to a few steady concerns: girls claiming their futures, children questioning unfair systems, Muslim and South Asian families shown with texture and ordinary humanity, and the quiet courage it takes to speak up. Even when the setting shifts from a Pakistani village to Themyscira or a magical seaside town, her characters tend to want the same thing. They want room to become themselves.

Saeed is also a founding member of We Need Diverse Books, which fits neatly with the work on her pages. She lives in Atlanta with her family, speaks English, Urdu, and Punjabi, and has joked that if she could live on one thing, it would be chai. That sounds about right for a writer whose books are thoughtful, welcoming, and full of heart without making a fuss about it.
