Series background & context

The Airhead trilogy starts with a premise that's pure Meg Cabot: a regular girl has her life flipped upside down in the most public way possible. Emerson Watts, called Em, is a smart, sarcastic high schooler who would rather read than shop, and she's very aware that the world treats pretty people differently. That makes her the wrong guest at the flashy opening of a huge Manhattan megastore, where celebrity is basically part of the decor. Em also has a strong streak of justice, which makes her hard to control.

That night goes sideways. A freak accident leaves Em waking up in a body that isn't hers, the body of famous teen supermodel Nikki Howard. Em's mind is still Em's, but everything else is suddenly designer clothes, paparazzi, and a schedule planned by strangers.

She has to learn how to play "Nikki" well enough to survive, while keeping her real identity secret from almost everyone. The books have a lot of fun with the absurdity of celebrity culture, from photo ops to scripted interviews, but they also take the identity crisis seriously. Em isn't just wearing someone else's life, she's stuck living it, which means every conversation is a performance and every mistake is public.

Because Nikki is more than a face, she's a brand. The corporations around her want a clean, marketable story, not an awkward girl asking inconvenient questions. That's where the bigger tension comes in: Em isn't just trying to fit into a new social world, she's trying to figure out what happened to her, what the people in charge are hiding, and what it means to own your own body when someone else is making money from it.

Friendships and crushes get complicated fast. The people who knew Em before don't recognize her, and the people who know Nikki don't know who is inside. Em has to decide who to trust, how much truth she can risk, and whether she can build a real life while everyone is looking at the wrong version of her.

It's the ultimate makeover story, except nobody asked for it.

The tone is YA with a fast pace, a lot of humor, and bursts of suspense. Start with Airhead and read straight through Being Nikki and Runaway, because the plot threads and revelations build across all three books. If you like stories that mix satire, romance, and a heroine who refuses to go along quietly, this trilogy hits that sweet spot.
