Side Effects

by Jeff Menapace

2016

Crippled by grief after losing her husband and son, FBI agent Maggie Allen volunteers for an experimental drug trial. The medication lifts her depression but supercharges her senses, turning her into the bureau’s best chance of catching a prolific serial killer—and its most fragile weapon.

Series background & context

The Agent Maggie Allen series begins with a classic hook and a sharp twist. Maggie Allen is an FBI agent who used to have a reputation for catching serial killers. By the time we meet her in Side Effects, that reputation feels like a past life.

Maggie has lost her husband and young son in a tragedy that has hollowed her out. Grief has left her numb, depressed, and barely able to get out of bed. Her old instincts are still there, but they are buried under exhaustion and a sense that nothing she does will matter anymore.

Desperate for anything that might help, she agrees to join a clinical drug trial. The experimental medication is supposed to ease her crushing depression. It does that, but it also comes with side effects that are far stranger than she expected. Maggie’s senses sharpen to an almost painful degree. Sounds, smells, and small details that most people would miss slam into her all at once.

Those side effects turn out to be exactly what her former partner needs. The FBI is chasing a prolific serial killer who keeps slipping through the cracks, and Maggie’s new, unwanted sensitivity might be the key to spotting patterns no one else can see. The book tracks her reluctant return to the field, torn between hiding from the world and using her altered perception to stop another wave of murders.

A big part of the tension in Side Effects comes from that double edge. The drug that helps Maggie function is also slowly eroding her sense of self. The more useful she becomes to the investigation, the more she has to question what it is costing her physically and mentally. The killer is dangerous, but so is the idea that she might not be able to live without the very thing that is changing her.

Tonally, the Maggie Allen story leans more toward crime thriller and psychological suspense than outright horror, though it definitely does not shy away from dark material. Readers who enjoy profiling, procedural detail, and damaged but determined investigators will feel at home here. With only one book currently available, it is an easy series to sample, and a natural bridge between Menapace’s more traditional horror and his leaner crime fiction.
