Author bio
A. E. Howe lives and writes on a small farm in the wilds of north Florida, sharing the place with his wife, a couple of horses and more cats than he can reliably count. He writes mysteries and paranormal whodunits that lean heavily on real places and real jobs.
Before novels, Howe studied English Education at the University of Georgia, planning for a classroom rather than a crime scene. He went on to work as a screenwriter and playwright, learning how to build tight plots, sharp dialogue and scenes that move.
That background shows up in his first published book, Broken State, a standalone thriller that arrived in 2014. Not long after, he turned to the long form storytelling he loved as a reader and began sketching out what would become the Larry Macklin Mysteries.
The Larry Macklin books follow a criminal investigator in a rural Florida county where his own father is the sheriff. Starting with November's Past, the series mixes murder cases with small town politics, old grudges and family loyalties that never quite stay buried. The early novels picked up attention close to home, including silver medals from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association for both November's Past and July's Trials.
Howe has kept Larry's world growing over more than twenty books, letting relationships change, careers stall or surge, and villains return when readers least expect it. The tone stays grounded in police work, but there is plenty of dry humor, family chaos and the occasional hurricane to keep things from feeling too tidy.
He likes his detectives competent but human, and he lets them make mistakes.
Alongside Larry, Howe writes the Baron Blasko Mysteries, a paranormal series set in Depression era Alabama. Those books pair Josephine Nicolson, a sharp witted Southern banker, with Baron Dragomir Blasko, the vampire who ends up living in her basement after a disastrous trip to Romania. The stories keep one foot in cozy mystery and one in old school gothic horror as the unlikely duo investigates murders and supernatural trouble around their small town.
More recently he has launched the Mortician Murder Mysteries, centered on Kay Lamberton, a funeral home co owner and reluctant sleuth in modern Florida. Across all three series, you can see the same interests at work, from detailed law enforcement procedure to the way ordinary people react when violence brushes up against their everyday lives.
Outside of fiction, Howe spent several years co hosting the Guns of Hollywood podcast, talking about how firearms are portrayed on screen. That time, along with friendships in law enforcement, feeds into the technical details in his books without ever turning them into manuals.
Day to day, he still splits his time between the keyboard and the farm, fitting in riding, competitive shooting and the unglamorous chores that come with animals and acreage. The result is a body of work that feels lived in and local, even when the stakes climb high.
