Adrian Hell Books in Order

Adrian Hell is James P Sumner's flagship thriller series, and it starts with a killer who is much harder to pin down than the people chasing him. Adrian is a professional assassin, but he is not written as a cold machine. From True Conviction onward, he comes across as sharp, funny, deeply damaged, and stubbornly guided by his own sense of right and wrong. He takes jobs for money, but he keeps drifting into situations where survival is not enough and doing the right thing gets complicated fast.

The books are told in the first person, which matters. You are inside Adrian's head for the gunfights, the snap decisions, the moral arguments, and the moments when he realizes he is in far deeper than he planned. That close point of view gives the series its real character. Adrian can be ruthless, but he is also painfully aware of what violence costs, especially once the books start digging into the family loss and old wounds that shape so much of his life.

He is not a clean hero, and that is exactly why the series works.

At first, the books read like hard-edged assassin thrillers. Hunter's Games throws Adrian into a city under siege. One Last Bullet turns toward revenge. Then Deadly Intent, A Necessary Kill, Good Intentions, and Thicker Than Blood widen the frame into terrorism, conspiracies, and powerful groups trying to bend the world to their will. The stakes keep climbing, but the emotional center stays personal. Adrian is always fighting for more than survival. He is trying to decide what kind of man he still is, and whether a killer can ever do enough good to balance what he has done.

Later books such as Blowback and The Devil You Know show what happens when Adrian tries, and mostly fails, to build some kind of peace around the damage he carries. The settings widen too, moving through places like Tokyo and Washington, D.C., while keeping the same bruising, close-up voice. By the time the story reaches Critical Strike and then Become Death, Adrian is caught in a much larger connected world that links his story with the GlobaTech and Roach novels.

There are useful side doors into the series as well. A Hero of War works as a prequel novella, showing Adrian as a young soldier before he becomes the feared figure of the main books. Five Rounds collects short stories from his early life as an assassin and helps fill in how his reputation was built. They are good extras, but the main run from True Conviction to Become Death is still the heart of the experience.

If you want thrillers with simple heroes and tidy moral lines, this may not be your series. If you want first-person action, dark humor, and a lead who is always one bad decision away from disaster, Adrian Hell is where James P Sumner's world really starts.
