Toxic

by Meghan Quinn

2013

An intense early Meghan Quinn romance about a relationship that burns hot from the start. Desire, jealousy, and bad decisions keep pulling the couple toward something they know may wreck them.

Series background & context

The Addiction books come from an earlier corner of Meghan Quinn's catalog, and they feel different from her later rom-coms on purpose. This is the moodier, more dramatic side of her writing, where attraction can be reckless, emotions run hot, and bad decisions have real fallout.

Nobody is keeping things tidy here.

The series opens with Toxic, and that title tells you a lot about the tone. These stories lean into obsession, push-pull chemistry, jealousy, and the kind of relationships that pull in friends, rivals, and old wounds whether anyone is ready or not. Even when the books are romantic, they are interested in damage too, in who gets hurt, who owns it, and whether love can survive the mess people make.

If you mostly know Quinn from later books full of broad comedy and polished banter, Addiction shows where some of her emotional instincts started. The characters are younger, the feelings are rougher, and the drama sits closer to the surface. Read this series if you want early Meghan Quinn with more angst than sparkle, and with romance that feels risky before it feels safe.
