The Adaptation books begin like a disaster story and quickly turn into something stranger. Birds fall out of the sky and crash airplanes across North America. Flights are grounded, fear spreads, and two teens, Reese Holloway and her debate partner David, are stranded far from home. When a late-night drive through Nevada ends in a wreck they should not survive, Reese wakes up in a military hospital with missing time, a healed body, and the strong sense that someone is lying to her.

From there, the series leans hard into conspiracy-thriller territory. Government agents, secret programs, Area 51 rumors, alien contact, and corporate power all crowd the edges of Reese's life. The setting matters, too. Lo keeps one foot in ordinary teen reality, school, family pressure, friendships, crushes, and the Bay Area, which makes the bigger science fiction turns land harder. The books feel grounded even when the sky gets weird.

Reese is the anchor.

What makes the series stand out is that the emotional story matters just as much as the plot. Reese's connection to David is real, but so is her pull toward Amber Gray, whose arrival opens the door to the series' biggest secrets. Amber is not just part of a love triangle. She is central to the question of what counts as human, what gets hidden, and how identity can shift under pressure. Lo is interested in attraction, trust, and self-understanding, but she never stops the story to explain it away.

Inheritance widens the scope. By that point Reese and David know they have been altered with alien DNA, and the danger is no longer private. Once the truth starts coming out, governments, extraterrestrials, and people with money to burn all want something from them. The stakes move from one frightened teenager trying to understand her body to a much larger fight over coexistence, secrecy, and the future.

Then there is Natural Selection, the companion novella. Instead of simply filling space between novels, it gives Amber her own center of gravity. Readers get a look at her earlier life, the world she comes from, and the coming-of-age ritual that forces her to choose how she will live between identities. That extra piece helps the whole series feel less like a puzzle built around Reese and more like a story about several people caught between worlds.

Overall, this is a fast-moving young adult science fiction series with a strong paranoid streak, but it is also a coming-of-age story about change in every sense. Bodies change. Loyalties change. The future changes shape depending on who gets to tell the truth. If you like thrillers with aliens, queer characters, and messy feelings that actually matter, this is a very good place to start.
