by Adam Nevill

A three-story sampler that offers a quick route into Nevill's short fiction. These tales lean into hauntings, ancestral dread, and the kind of quiet menace that lingers after the lights go out.
Some Will Not Sleep
by Adam Nevill

This collection gathers Nevill's early horror stories into one sharp, varied volume. Expect ghosts, grotesque images, and everyday situations that slide into something far stranger and nastier.
Before You Wake
by Adam Nevill

Hasty for the Dark
by Adam Nevill

Nevill's second major collection ranges from supernatural chillers to stranger, more speculative nightmares. The stories pull from occult horror, weird fiction, and old-school unease without losing his talent for atmosphere.

Author bio
Adam Nevill was born in Birmingham, England, in 1969 and grew up in England and New Zealand. Those two landscapes, old British history on one side and wide, unsettled space on the other, seem to echo through his fiction. He writes horror, but not horror built only on shocks. His books usually start with people already under pressure, then push them into places where bad history, buried belief, and something inhuman are waiting.
He has a real gift for making a place feel wrong.
Nevill started writing Banquet for the Damned in 1997 while he was a mature student in St Andrews, Scotland. He finished the first draft in London and kept revising it for years. His first horror short story appeared in Gathering the Bones, and Ramsey Campbell later urged him to send the novel to a publisher. Nevill has recalled getting the call that Banquet for the Damned would be published while he was working as a uniformed porter in Mayfair, which feels like exactly the kind of odd real-life detail that belongs in a horror writer's origin story.
Before writing full time, he worked in publishing as an editor, including at Virgin Books. He has said that he wrote much of The Ritual after work, late at night, in the hours he could carve out for himself. That persistence matters when you look at the shape of his career. The books feel carefully built, but they also have the rawness of someone following an obsession all the way through.
For many readers, The Ritual is the doorway in, a survival story in the Scandinavian forest where a bad hiking trip turns into a confrontation with something ancient. Last Days takes a film-maker into the orbit of a murderous cult. No One Gets Out Alive traps a struggling young woman in a deeply unpleasant house and keeps tightening the screws. Then there are books like The Reddening, Cunning Folk, and The Vessel, where rural England, old rites, and ugly local secrets press in from every side. He can also shift gears, as Lost Girl shows with its near-future collapse, and All the Fiends of Hell does with full-scale alien apocalypse.
He likes houses, woods, cults, and the kinds of neighbours you should never borrow tools from.
Readers who click with Nevill usually talk about atmosphere first. He is very good at buildings with bad energy, objects that seem to watch back, and landscapes that feel older than the people walking through them. He also writes strong short fiction. Some Will Not Sleep won the British Fantasy Award for Best Collection, and later books like Hasty for the Dark and Wyrd and Other Derelictions show how comfortable he is moving from classic ghost-story chills to stranger, more experimental forms of horror.
He has the awards to back up the readership, too. The Ritual, Last Days, No One Gets Out Alive, and The Reddening all won the August Derleth Award for Best Horror Novel. In 2016 he started his own press, Ritual Limited, first to collect his short fiction, then to publish later work with more control over how the books looked and reached readers. The Ritual and No One Gets Out Alive were both adapted as feature films.
Nevill lives in Devon, England. From there he has kept building a body of work full of haunted flats, cursed villages, collapsing futures, and very bad journeys into the wild. If you like horror that feels physical, bleak, and steeped in place, he is an easy writer to keep coming back to.
