Adam Bradley Books in Order

Adam Bradley grew up between Salt Lake City, Utah, and Los Gatos, California. His early education took an unexpected turn when his family pulled him from elementary school and his grandparents taught him at home through the years before high school. His grandmother, an English teacher, encouraged him to read closely and write what he noticed.

Poetry came first. As a child, Bradley was handed a pad and pencil and asked to describe the world around him, from a garden to the sky overhead. That habit of listening for language, sound, and rhythm still runs through his work.

He learned early that words can do more than sit quietly on a page.

After high school, Bradley studied English at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. There, he worked as a research assistant to John Callahan, who became Ralph Ellison's literary executor. Ellison's unfinished papers, drafts, notes, and many versions of a long-awaited second novel gave Bradley a close look at the messy, patient work behind a book.

That experience pointed him toward graduate study in English at Harvard University, where he earned his Ph.D. in 2003. It also led to a lasting interest in Ellison's life and work. In Ralph Ellison in Progress, Bradley follows the history of Ellison's unfinished second novel and asks what the surviving drafts reveal about writing, race, and American identity.

He takes the working process seriously.

Bradley's best-known books often invite readers to pay closer attention to forms of writing they may already know by heart. Book of Rhymes looks at rap's meter, rhyme, storytelling, and wordplay. The Anthology of Rap, coedited with Andrew DuBois, gathers lyrics across rap history and places them in conversation with a wider poetic tradition. The Poetry of Pop widens the frame, listening to popular songs from different eras and genres for the ways melody, voice, repetition, and language work together.

That approach has carried into his teaching and public work. He founded the Laboratory for Race and Popular Culture, known as the RAP Lab, to bring research, teaching, and community projects together around race, literature, music, and popular culture. Its classroom programs have used hip-hop and pop lyrics to help students explore the tools of language arts.

Bradley has also worked as an editor, curator, and essayist. He has collaborated on projects about music and culture, including a memoir with Common, One Day It'll All Make Sense, and has helped bring ideas from the classroom into museums and public conversations. His work returns again and again to a simple question: what can careful listening tell us about a culture and the people making it?

He is now a professor of English and African American Studies at UCLA and directs the RAP Lab there. Bradley lives in Los Angeles, where he continues to write about the connections among literature, music, history, and everyday language.
