Achewillow Books in Order

The Achewillow series sits in a lovely strange space between cozy mystery, small-town fantasy, and horror. Its setting, the town of Achewillow, lies on the border between Vermont and Quebec, and that borderland feeling matters. The place is familiar enough to feel homey, but off just enough that every café conversation, alleyway, and town custom seems to hide another layer.

At the center is Miriam DuFour, a young French Canadian woman whose life is already in rough shape when the story begins. She has been kicked out of cooking school and ends up inheriting a little café from her great-grandaunt. Miriam arrives planning to sell the place and move on. Instead, she finds a town full of odd people, persistent magic, and a family history that is much more tangled than she expected.

The series gets a lot of mileage out of its mix of the inviting and the alarming. There are bakers, regulars, gossip, and the daily business of feeding people. There are also cloud-worshipping cults, a widow whose husband is a ghost, immortal raccoons, and something killing young women in the alleys. That contrast is the whole point. Dubeau wants the comforts of a close community to sit right next to the reminder that this town has teeth.

Miriam is a good lead for that kind of story because she is practical, bruised, and not especially eager to become anybody's chosen hero. She keeps trying to solve immediate problems, the café, money, whether she even wants this new life, while bigger questions keep closing in around her. Why was she brought back to this place? What does her family know? And what kind of danger has been woven into Achewillow long before she arrived?

The tone is warmer and funnier than Dubeau's Saint-Ferdinand horror, but it never turns harmless. The series likes food, ritual, friendship, and odd little jokes, yet it keeps a dark current underneath. That balance fits the project's origin as a fiction podcast written by Dubeau and voiced by Amy Frost, then expanded into novel form with A Dash of Demon. It has the intimacy of a narrated tale and the layering of a serial story.

The comfort is real, but so is the danger.

If you are wondering what to expect, think character-first supernatural fiction with a strong sense of place. The pleasures here are atmosphere, found community, and the creeping realization that Miriam has stepped into a world that was waiting for her. Readers who like eerie towns, lived-in magical rules, and horror that can be funny without going soft will probably click with Achewillow.
