A Year in the Life Books in Order

The A Year in the Life books are a smart twist on time travel because the premise stays the same while the lives around it keep changing. Each novel sends a present-day character back to a different year of the 1980s and asks a simple, uncomfortable question, if you could relive the year that shaped you, what would you actually do differently?

That question does a lot of work.

These are not big, world-saving adventures. They are second-chance stories about regret, memory, missed love, family damage and the strange weight of ordinary decisions. A mysterious way back appears, often in the form of a bracelet, and the character is dropped into a younger version of themselves. They know what pain is coming. They usually think they know how to fix it. The tension comes from finding out whether life is really that easy to rewrite.

Each book has its own lead, setting and slice of 1980s Britain. 1980: A Year in the Life of Keith Diamond follows a washed-up shock jock who lands back in Fleet Street and the music scene of 1980. 1981: A Year in the Life of Nick Taylor gives a grown man the chance to relive the worst year of his childhood, with all the frustration that comes from knowing what must change while still being ten years old. 1982: A Year in the Life of Wendy Wood moves into the Oxford music world, where a singer tries to reclaim the stardom that slipped away.

The later books keep shifting the angle. 1983: A Year in the Life of Jenna Rae is tied to place and community, with a woman trying to protect a Cornish village and her family's future. 1984: A Year in the Life of Nobby Clarke mixes gambling, family trouble and a hard rule that stops its hero from using time travel simply to get rich. 1985: A Year in the Life of Robbie James brings in early tech culture, rivalries and pop history. 1986: A Year in the Life of Lucy Hart turns toward marriage, freedom and reinvention in suburban Surrey.

What links them is the tone. These books are nostalgic, but they are not soft-focus fantasies about the good old days. Ayres clearly enjoys the music, television, fashions and everyday texture of the decade, yet he also knows the 1980s were full of messy relationships, class tensions, personal disappointments and choices people carried for decades. That mix keeps the nostalgia lively instead of cosy.

Because each story stands on its own, this is an easy series to dip into. You can start with the setting or character type that most interests you. Still, there is a quiet pleasure in reading several in a row and watching how Ayres uses the same second-chance device to explore very different lives. One book may be funny, another romantic, another more bruised and reflective, but they all circle the same idea, going back is only simple until you are actually there.
