A Tale of Magic...

by Chris Colfer

2019

Series background & context

The A Tale of Magic series is a prequel to The Land of Stories that follows Brystal Evergreen, the girl who will one day become the Fairy Godmother. Set generations earlier, it explores how magic became legal and how one determined teenager helped change an entire world.

In A Tale of Magic... Brystal grows up in the Southern Kingdom, where women are forbidden to read and anyone suspected of magic faces harsh punishment. Secretly obsessed with books, she discovers a hidden section of her library and a volume on magic that reveals she is a fairy. Caught and sentenced to a grim correctional facility, she is rescued by Madame Weatherberry, a powerful fairy who whisks her away to a hidden academy.

Life at the Academy of Magic gives Brystal her first real friends and a place to explore her abilities, but something is wrong in the wider kingdoms. A mysterious Snow Queen is spreading blizzards and fear, and Brystal slowly learns that the line between fairy and witch is not as simple as everyone has been told. The book balances school story fun with an adventure about bigotry and self acceptance.

A Tale of Witchcraft... picks up with Brystal serving as Fairy Godmother and leading a new Fairy Council. The world is freer than it was, but a secret group called the Righteous Brotherhood wants to roll back every change and punish magic users. At the same time a charismatic witch opens her own academy, tempting Brystal's students, and a dark voice begins whispering in Brystal's mind, pushing her toward burnout and despair.

In A Tale of Sorcery... the threats become even larger. Brystal has made a bargain with Death to hunt down an Immortal in exchange for her life, just as a malevolent force rises from deep beneath the earth. Old enemies, former students, and uneasy allies must work together across kingdoms to keep their world from tearing itself apart.

Compared with The Land of Stories, this series leans more directly into questions of prejudice, religious extremism, and the cost of leading a movement, while still keeping plenty of talking animals, magical duels, and jokes. It is a strong starting point for readers who like their fantasy with a little more politics, or a rewarding prequel for fans who already know where Brystal's journey eventually leads.
