That detail tells you a lot about him right away. He is competent, loyal, and used to putting himself in harm's way for the people, and animals, depending on him.

He also knows that the obvious answer is often the laziest one.

That matters because Bryce Greyson comes to him under a mountain of suspicion. Four years after her cheating husband was shot, the remains of her former roommate, who also betrayed her, are found buried at her old college. To police and the media, the pattern looks neat enough to be irresistible. Two dead people hurt Bryce, so Bryce must have hurt them back. Sam is the one person willing to slow the story down and ask what does not fit.

As a premise, it is simple and sturdy. A woman the world has already judged hires a dog-handling investigator to clear her name. From there Carr builds outward into a more layered puzzle about old grudges, public pressure, college history, buried bodies, and the gap between what looks convincing and what is true. Sam's law-enforcement background gives him authority, but his status as a PI also lets him move in ways official investigators cannot. He can listen, prod, and follow side paths without worrying as much about procedure.

The canine angle is part of the fun.

Carr has always liked memorable animals, and Sam's partnership with trained dogs gives this book its own flavor. The investigation has tension and real danger, but the dogs keep the story lively and grounded. That makes the tone a good middle ground between cozy comfort and straight procedural work. There are murders, suspects, and lies everywhere, but there is also room for personality and the kind of scene that reminds you Carr enjoys her cast as much as her plotting.

With only one Sam MacKade novel so far, the appeal is already easy to see. Readers who like private investigators, accused clients, and cases where the first solution is almost certainly the wrong one should be comfortable here. If you also like dog-centered mystery fiction, this is even more of a fit. Sam is not a flashy hero. He is the sort of investigator who keeps asking the next smart question until the whole tidy accusation starts to crack, and that is a strong way to build a mystery.
