Series background & context
The A Mace Bauer Mystery books follow Mace Bauer, the middle daughter in a close, argumentative Florida family. Mace works at a wildlife park in fictional Himmarshee, a small ranch-country town where gossip travels quickly and the surroundings include cattle, citrus, heat, and more wildlife than a person might want near a crime scene.
Her biggest complication is Mama, a sharply dressed Southern original with a taste for sweet wine, good manners, and fresh starts. Mama has been married several times and has a remarkable habit of being near the trouble, even when she is not responsible for it. Mace's sisters, Maddie and Marty, bring their own viewpoints and worries, so each case becomes a family project whether Mace asks for help or not.
Mama may be a magnet for chaos, but Mace is the one who has to make sense of it.
Mace's working relationship and on-and-off romance with Himmarshee detective Carlos Martinez adds another pressure point. He has a badge and a case to solve; she has personal ties, too many questions, and little patience for waiting on the sidelines. Their clashes give the books an ongoing thread. The series also makes use of corners of Florida less familiar than theme parks and beach resorts. Trail rides, ranches, wildlife facilities, local bars, dump runs, and movie crews all fit naturally into Himmarshee's everyday life.
Cases arrive in different forms. Mama Does Time starts when a body turns up in Mama's vintage convertible. Mama Rides Shotgun moves onto a Florida trail ride, and Mama Gets Hitched puts a killing beside wedding preparations. In Mama Sees Stars, a Hollywood crew takes over town, while Mama Gets Trashed begins with a search at the dump and a discovery no one expects. The stories can stand alone, but reading in order lets the family relationships and Mace's connection with Carlos develop naturally.
Expect cozy-style mysteries with a comic edge rather than grim crime stories. The stakes are real, but the mood leaves room for sisterly squabbles, Southern manners, romantic awkwardness, and the occasional alligator-sized problem.
At heart, these are hometown mysteries about a daughter trying to protect her family without being pulled under by their latest mess. Mace wants answers and a little peace. Himmarshee rarely offers either.
