A God in the Shed Books in Order

The A God in the Shed books take place in Saint-Ferdinand, a small Quebec village that looks ordinary until you notice the cemetery. It is far too big for a place that quiet, and its graves tell you this is not a town that ever really got past its past. The series starts as a murder mystery, but it quickly widens into supernatural horror, old bargains, and the sense that something has been feeding on the town for generations.

The story circles around a few key figures. Venus McKenzie is a teenage local who gets pulled close to the town's hidden evil. Inspector Stephen Crowley is the hard-edged policeman trying to hold things together, and his son Daniel lives with the fallout of choices made long before he understood them. Dubeau uses these different viewpoints to show Saint-Ferdinand from several angles, home, workplace, school, and family, so the village becomes more than a backdrop.

One of the big appeals of the series is how it layers its trouble. On the surface, there is the Saint-Ferdinand Killer and the immediate fear that comes with violence in a small community. Underneath that sits a much older threat, an ancient malevolent god with deep ties to the place and to the people who live there. By the time Song of the Sandman begins, the damage is already spreading outward, with the aftermath of the Cicero's Circus massacre, people fleeing town, and a doomsday cult ready to turn fear into worship.

That mix gives the books a particular feel. They have some of the energy of a coming-of-age story, some of the pull of a detective novel, and a strong streak of cosmic horror. Dubeau likes the moment when characters realize the explanation they hoped for is far too small. Even when the plot gets large and strange, the tension stays personal because it is always tied to families, friendships, guilt, and the uneasy question of what a town is willing to ignore in order to survive.

The town is the trap.

If you pick up this series, expect atmosphere first. Saint-Ferdinand feels rural, close-knit, and wounded, the kind of place where everybody knows a little, nobody knows enough, and the past keeps leaking into the present. The horror can get dark, but it is grounded by character work and by the slow uncovering of history. Readers who like small-town terror, damaged communities, and supernatural mysteries that keep opening into something larger will probably feel at home here, even if the people in Saint-Ferdinand never really are.
