Seattle matters here, too. Roberts uses the city and its surrounding neighborhoods as working spaces rather than postcard scenery. Sadie moves through blood-spattered homes, seedy properties, better hotels, and other corners of everyday life where violence leaves a mess someone has to handle. That cleanup angle gives the series its flavor. These books care about aftermath as much as detection.

The tone is a smart mix of banter, nerves, and real danger. The title may sound playful, but the stories have a dark streak underneath them. Sadie's ability is tied to grief and unfinished business, so even the lighter scenes tend to carry a bruise beneath the joke. By the time you get to Dead Suite and Drop Dead Beauty, the personal stakes are just as important as the crime plots.

They are messier, and darker, than the name first suggests.
