36 Best Star Wars Books

The best Star Wars books, ranked by how many expert sources recommend each one, with notes on Canon, Legends, favorite characters and the best place to start.

Our take

Star Wars books can follow familiar film heroes, introduce an entirely new cast or explore daily life far from the Jedi and Sith. The first choice is continuity. Canon books share the newer screen timeline, while Legends offers an earlier, separate body of stories. Both include novels, comics and books for younger readers, with different expectations about how much of the surrounding galaxy you already know.

Lost Stars offers a personal route through the Galactic Civil War, while Bloodline puts Leia in a political thriller. For Jedi relationships before the prequels, try Master & Apprentice; for a new era, Light of the Jedi opens the High Republic. In Legends, Heir to the Empire begins the original Thrawn trilogy, which continues through Dark Force Rising and The Last Command. The 2017 Thrawn instead follows his rise in Canon. Start with a favorite character or a contained story, then follow a series in order when its world and cast appeal to you.

The 36 books, ranked

Ranked by how many expert sources name each book. Ties go to the book more people recommend.

1

For readers who want a Legends continuation featuring the original film heroes. Zahn combines military strategy with new allies and antagonists, though this begins a trilogy and follows a timeline separate from the later sequel films.

What it's about

Five years after the Empire's defeat at Endor, the New Republic remains vulnerable. Grand Admiral Thrawn gathers surviving Imperial forces, threatening Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia, and the fragile peace they have worked to build.

2

For readers who want a complete emotional story alongside familiar film events. Gray's two opposing viewpoints make loyalty personal, though the romance and young adult perspective receive more attention than Jedi mysteries or detailed military strategy.

What it's about

Childhood friends Ciena Ree and Thane Kyrell grow up to fight on opposite sides of the Galactic Civil War. Their love story runs through the rise of the Rebellion, the fall of the Empire, and the damage both leave behind.

3

Dark Disciple

by Christie Golden2015

For Clone Wars fans who want a darker character story centered on Ventress and Quinlan Vos. The uneasy partnership gives the mission emotional stakes, though familiarity with the animated characters helps and the tone is more tragic than adventurous.

What it's about

The Jedi Council pairs Quinlan Vos with former Sith apprentice Asajj Ventress to assassinate Count Dooku. Their mission demands trust between two natural enemies, while growing feelings and the dark side make every choice more dangerous.

4

Kenobi

Star Wars Legends

by John Jackson Miller

For Obi-Wan fans who want a more contained story with the feel of a frontier Western. Miller gives Tatooine's local conflicts unusual attention, though this is a Legends novel and much of its perspective belongs to new characters.

What it's about

Obi-Wan Kenobi retreats to Tatooine to protect the infant Luke Skywalker and conceal his Jedi identity. Conflict between settlers and Tusken Raiders pulls him into local troubles, threatening the secrecy on which his larger mission depends.

5

Revenge of the Sith

by Matthew Stover

For readers who want more of Anakin's inner conflict than the film can show. Stover turns familiar events into an intense psychological tragedy, though the outcome is already known and the novel's additional material belongs to its older continuity.

What it's about

As war tears apart the Republic, Jedi launch a mission to rescue the kidnapped Chancellor Palpatine. Anakin's nightmares about Padmé and temptation by the dark side force him toward choices with consequences across the galaxy.

6

For readers who want the unsettled period after Endor explored through new characters. Wendig broadens the view of a galaxy without its Emperor, though the present-tense style and shifting interludes can take adjustment and the trilogy remains unfinished here.

What it's about

The Emperor is dead, but peace is nowhere close. Pilot Norra Wexley joins a rough-edged team chasing Imperial holdouts through the chaos after Endor.

7

Bloodline

by Claudia Gray2016

For readers who want Leia at the center of a political thriller. Gray makes institutional divisions and personal loyalties consequential, though knowledge of the original and sequel films helps explain why the New Republic's problems matter.

What it's about

Years after Endor, Senator Leia Organa faces New Republic gridlock, hidden enemies, and a growing threat at the edges of the galaxy. It is both a political thriller and a key step toward the birth of the Resistance.

8

For Leia fans interested in the convictions behind her later leadership. Gray connects coming-of-age questions with the beginnings of rebellion, though the young adult focus and slower political development offer less action than a military adventure.

What it's about

Sixteen-year-old Leia is training to become heir to Alderaan when she realizes her parents are hiding dangerous secrets. Her search for the truth becomes the start of her life as a rebel.

9

Path of Destruction

by Drew Karpyshyn2006

For readers who want a Sith-centered Legends story well before the films. Karpyshyn gives Bane's ambition a direct, forceful progression, though the brutality and trilogy structure make it a darker commitment than a standalone heroic adventure.

What it's about

A disillusioned miner enters the Sith order during an ancient war with the Jedi. As his power grows, Bane questions the order's teachings and develops ideas that will reshape the future of the Sith.

10

Queen's Shadow

by EK Johnston

For readers who want Padmé and her handmaidens treated as political actors with distinct relationships. Johnston emphasizes identity, trust and Senate work, though the reflective pace is quieter than the battles suggested by the franchise's title.

What it's about

When her term as queen ends, Padmé Amidala accepts a position representing Naboo in the Galactic Senate. With her trusted handmaidens, she navigates unfamiliar political alliances while adapting the identities and protections developed during her reign.

11

For readers curious about Thrawn's rise within the Empire in current Canon. Zahn makes observation and military problem-solving central to the appeal, though the episodic advancement and Imperial politics can feel slower than a conventional adventure.

What it's about

Rescued from exile, Chiss strategist Thrawn enters the Imperial Navy with Eli Vanto as his translator and aide. His military brilliance brings rapid advancement, but unconventional tactics and dangerous political rivalries threaten his rise.

12

Battlefront

Twilight Company

by Alexander Freed2015

For readers who want the Galactic Civil War seen from the ground rather than a cockpit or Jedi council. Freed gives ordinary Rebel soldiers weight and complexity, though the military focus is gritty and offers few familiar central heroes.

What it's about

The Rebel soldiers of Twilight Company endure brutal ground battles as the Empire forces their retreat. An unexpected ally offers a chance to strike back, pushing the exhausted unit toward a dangerous assault on the enemy's military heart.

13

For readers continuing directly from Heir to the Empire. Zahn expands the strategic contest and the heroes' competing investigations, though this middle volume relies heavily on the first book and leaves the larger conflict for the conclusion.

What it's about

Grand Admiral Thrawn intensifies his campaign against the New Republic while Han and Lando investigate possible treason. Their search leads toward a lost fleet, and Luke faces a Dark Jedi intent on drawing him toward the dark side.

14

Darth Plagueis

by James Luceno

For readers interested in Sith strategy and the political groundwork behind the prequels. Luceno makes ambition and long planning central, though the dense connections and Legends status make it less straightforward than a self-contained adventure.

What it's about

Darth Plagueis pursues power over life and death while training his chosen apprentice, Darth Sidious. Their plans for galactic domination and the destruction of the Jedi are complicated by ambition and the ruthless traditions of the Sith.

15

For readers who want to enter the High Republic with a mostly new cast. Soule uses a large-scale emergency to introduce Jedi at their height, though the many viewpoints launch a wider publishing story rather than a completely isolated adventure.

What it's about

A hyperspace catastrophe scatters deadly debris across the galaxy, forcing Jedi and Republic responders into an impossible rescue. As worlds face destruction, the Nihil reveal that chaos can be used as a weapon.

16

Master & Apprentice

by Claudia Gray2019

For readers who want Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's relationship explored before The Phantom Menace. Gray makes their disagreements about the Jedi meaningful, though the political mission and prophecy discussions take more space than straightforward lightsaber action.

What it's about

Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi head to Pijal for a mission that becomes tangled in prophecy, politics, and distrust. Their bond is tested at the very moment each fears the other may be pulling away.

17

For readers who want a harsher survival story centered on a mysterious antagonist. Dawson gives Phasma's background its own atmosphere and supporting cast, though the bleak violence and indirect narration make this a less welcoming first Star Wars novel.

What it's about

An interrogation aboard a First Order ship peels back Captain Phasma's hidden past and the ruthless choices that made her. It is a colder, darker Star Wars novel that treats survival and ambition as their own kind of battlefield.

18

For readers ready to complete the original Legends Thrawn trilogy. Zahn brings the political, military and personal threads together with a larger payoff, though the extensive setup makes this a poor entry point on its own.

What it's about

Thrawn's clone soldiers put the New Republic under mounting pressure. As Han seeks help from smugglers and Leia prepares for her twins' birth, a small team must enter the fortress housing the cloning machines and confront a dangerous Dark Jedi.

19

For readers who want a smaller romantic adventure outside the saga's main power struggles. Córdova makes Batuu's local connections and criminal trouble central, though the theme-park setting and limited galactic stakes will not suit every fan.

What it's about

Childhood friends Izzy and Jules reunite on Batuu after thirteen years apart, just as Izzy's dangerous delivery job goes sideways. Smugglers, secrets, and old feelings turn their reunion into a headlong race through Black Spire Outpost.

20

A New Dawn

Star Wars

by John Jackson Miller

For Rebels fans curious about Kanan and Hera before the television series. Miller builds their partnership through a local Imperial conflict, though readers mainly seeking the later show's full ensemble should expect a more limited cast.

What it's about

After the fall of the Jedi, Kanan Jarrus lives under an Empire tightening its control over the galaxy. His first encounter with Hera Syndulla draws two future rebels together amid the dangers of this new political order.

21

Battlefront II

Inferno Squad

by Christie Golden

For readers interested in an Imperial unit whose undercover work strains its loyalties. Golden emphasizes the tension between orders and personal judgment, though the story's connections with Battlefront II make it especially useful as a game companion.

What it's about

After the Death Star’s destruction, the Empire sends Inferno Squad to infiltrate the remnants of Saw Gerrera’s Partisans. Operating inside a rebel faction, the elite soldiers face exposure and difficult choices about the limits of Imperial loyalty.

22

Canto Bight

by Mira Grant2017

For readers who want short stories about people beyond the Jedi, soldiers and galactic leaders. The casino setting supports several tones and perspectives, though the collection's appeal depends on enjoying a side location rather than major saga revelations.

What it's about

Set in the casino city from The Last Jedi, this Star Wars anthology follows hustlers, workers, and high rollers chasing luck and survival. Rae Carson's contribution centers on Lexo Sooger, a masseur forced to confront his past to save his adopted daughter.

23

For Rogue One fans interested in the choices and manipulation behind the Death Star project. Luceno builds tension through scientific ambition and political pressure, though the prequel's slower, institutional focus contains less action than the film.

What it's about

Orson Krennic seeks to turn Galen Erso's energy research into a weapon for the secret Death Star project. After rescuing the scientist's family, he uses their indebtedness to draw Galen into a dangerous galactic struggle.

24

Resistance Reborn

by Rebecca Roanhorse2019

For sequel-era fans who want to follow the Resistance rebuilding after The Last Jedi. Roanhorse gathers characters from several corners of Canon, though those connections reward wider familiarity and may feel crowded to film-only readers.

What it's about

After the Resistance barely escapes Crait, Leia, Poe, Rey, and Finn must gather allies before the First Order closes in. Roanhorse turns the scramble to rebuild into a galaxy-spanning mission full of familiar faces and hard choices.

25

Shadow of the Sith

by Adam Christopher2022

For readers who want Luke and Lando in a Canon adventure between the original and sequel trilogies. Christopher connects their search with lingering Sith threats, though the many ties to The Rise of Skywalker make film familiarity especially useful.

What it's about

Years after the Empire's defeat, Luke Skywalker experiences troubling visions while Lando searches for his missing daughter. Reports of a Sith assassin draw them into a dangerous pursuit connected with a family fleeing enemies across the galaxy.

26

Ahsoka

by EK Johnston

For Ahsoka fans interested in her private life after the fall of the Jedi. Johnston concentrates on identity and the choice to help others, though the quieter young adult approach provides less of the large-scale action of her screen adventures.

What it's about

After surviving Order 66, former Jedi Ahsoka Tano tries to build a life under Imperial rule. Threats to innocent people force her to choose whether to remain hidden or return to the fight against oppression.

27

Alphabet Squadron

by Alexander Freed2019

For readers who want a new pilot ensemble facing the damage left by Imperial service. Freed gives mistrust and accountability as much weight as aerial combat, though the opening volume starts a trilogy rather than resolving the mission.

What it's about

Imperial defector Yrica Quell joins five mismatched New Republic pilots tasked with destroying Shadow Wing, a lethal TIE fighter unit. Their pursuit after Endor tests uneasy loyalties and personal scars as they learn to fight together.

28

For readers who want a visual account of Vader becoming a Sith after the prequels. Soule's first collection focuses sharply on identity and violence, though it begins a longer comic run and covers only its opening arc.

What it's about

Beginning immediately after Revenge of the Sith, this comic collection follows Darth Vader as he acquires his red lightsaber and establishes himself as a Sith Lord. It collects the first six issues of the 2017 series.

29

I, Jedi

by Michael A Stackpole1998

For Legends readers who want Jedi training through a pilot and investigator's personal viewpoint. Corran Horn offers a different angle on the Force, though familiarity with Rogue Squadron and the surrounding Legends era enriches the story.

What it's about

When his wife Mirax disappears, Rogue Squadron pilot Corran Horn turns to Luke Skywalker's academy to develop his latent Jedi abilities. His search leads toward a pirate organization, testing both his investigative experience and his relationship with the Force.

30

Lando's Luck

Flight of the Falcon

by Justina Ireland2018

For younger readers who want a fast Lando adventure with a mischievous partner. Ireland keeps the smuggling dilemma approachable and playful, though the middle-grade format offers a lighter, shorter story than the adult novels here.

What it's about

Caught smuggling on Hynestia, Lando accepts a delivery mission involving a valuable globe as the price of freedom. A stowaway princess asks him to return it to its rightful planet instead, complicating the bargain for him and L3-37.

31

Last Shot

A Han and Lando Novel

by Daniel Jose Older2018

For Han and Lando fans who want friendship, chaos and a more unusual supporting cast. Older mixes action with life after their earlier adventures, though the jumps between time periods require attention to keep the plot's connections clear.

What it's about

Han Solo and Lando Calrissian reunite when an enemy connected to their past hunts Lando with assassins. A mysterious transmitter links earlier Millennium Falcon adventures to a new threat, sending the pair across the galaxy with unlikely allies.

32

Most Wanted

by Rae Carson2018

For readers interested in Han and Qi'ra before Solo. Carson builds their uneasy cooperation through an underworld chase, though the young adult perspective and early-career setting deliberately limit how much of Han's later persona appears.

What it's about

Before Solo, Han and Qi'ra are street kids on Corellia trying to climb out of the underworld. One bad job sends them running from pirates, a droid syndicate, the Empire, and the ruthless boss they failed.

33

Tarkin

by James Luceno

For readers interested in the Empire's institutions and the psychology of one of its architects. Luceno gives Tarkin's methods and background sustained attention, though the restrained focus on Imperial order is less emotionally inviting than a Rebel adventure.

What it's about

The Emperor assigns Tarkin and Darth Vader to hunt a band of elusive freedom fighters. Their mission explores Tarkin's tactical methods and relentless pursuit of order as the Empire works to consolidate its control.

34

For readers curious about Ben Solo's transition toward Kylo Ren. Soule uses a short comic arc to make the character's uncertainty immediate, though the compressed format cannot answer every question about his fall or the wider sequel era.

What it's about

Ben Solo's fall from Luke Skywalker's Jedi school becomes a dangerous search for identity. After a disaster leaves his future uncertain, Ben meets the Knights of Ren and takes steps that will define Kylo Ren.

35

Women of the Galaxy

by Amy Ratcliffe

For readers who enjoy browsing character profiles and new illustrations more than following one plot. Ratcliffe brings women from many Star Wars media together, though its publication-era selection and reference format offer breadth rather than detailed biographies.

What it's about

This illustrated reference profiles seventy-five female characters from across the Star Wars films, television series, novels, comics, and games. Amy Ratcliffe explores their histories, personalities, and contributions to the galaxy, accompanied by artwork from eighteen artists.

36

For readers who like Star Wars through a morally flexible archaeologist and an unreliable crew. Wong's opening arc offers treasure-hunting energy outside the main heroes' story, though Aphra's established history adds context and the comic continues beyond this volume.

What it's about

Doctor Aphra assembles a treasure-hunting crew to seek the cursed Rings of Vaale after the Battle of Hoth. A powerful rival also wants the prize, while doubts about her companions threaten an already hazardous expedition.
