Author bio

Jenn McKinlay came to fiction by way of the library world. She studied English literature and library science at Southern Connecticut State University and worked as a librarian in Connecticut and later Arizona before writing became her full-time job. That background shows up all over her books, especially in the way she writes close communities, everyday work, and people who know how to dig for answers.

Books were part of the furniture.

McKinlay has said the idea of becoming a writer really clicked when she saw Romancing the Stone as a teenager and realized writing could be an actual life. She kept at it for years as a side hustle, writing around work and family life. Her first published books were romantic comedies, but she eventually discovered that mystery suited her especially well. The mix of puzzles, humor, and ordinary people in extraordinary messes turned out to be a natural fit.

Then the cupcakes arrived.

With Sprinkle with Murder, she launched the Cupcake Bakery Mysteries and introduced readers to Scottsdale bakers Melanie Cooper and Angie DeLaura. Those books helped make her a familiar name to cozy mystery readers. People tend to come back for the friendship as much as the crimes, plus all the bakery chaos, family drama, weddings, and town events that keep the series moving.

She kept building from there. The Library Lover's Mysteries, beginning with Books Can Be Deceiving, draw directly on her library experience and center on Lindsey Norris in coastal Connecticut. The Hat Shop Mysteries start with Cloche and Dagger and move the action to London, where cousins Scarlett Parker and Vivian Tremont run a hat shop on Portobello Road and keep tripping over bodies. On the romance side, books like The Good Ones, Paris is Always a Good Idea, and Wait for It show the same love of banter, community, and emotionally messy people trying to make a better next choice.

She has also written under the pen names Lucy Lawrence and Josie Belle. Those names are attached to the Decoupage Mysteries and the Good Buy Girls Mysteries, which gave her room to play with craft shops, thrifting, and more amateur sleuths in small-town settings. Across all of it, certain things stay the same: smart women at the center, strong friend groups, lots of local color, and plots driven by curiosity.

Her range is wider than one shelf.

In addition to her mystery series, McKinlay has written contemporary romance, romantic comedy novellas, and fantasy. The Museum of Literature romances lean into her bookish side with literary adventures and travel, while Witches of Dubious Origin adds magic to a librarian heroine. She has also won awards for both romance and cozy mystery, and her novel Paris is Always a Good Idea was adapted for the screen as a Hallmark+ streaming series.

These days she lives in Arizona in a house she has described as overflowing with books, pets, and her husband's guitars. She has also spoken about spending years writing on the side before the work finally broke through, which may help explain why her books feel so steady and lived-in. Even when the setup is playful, cupcakes, hat shops, libraries, beach towns, there is usually a practical woman at the center trying to keep life together while the world gets complicated around her.
